Vets360 Founder Rick Collins Being Honored at the 'Champions' Leadership Conference

Champions Leadership, and Research Conference™ . This event, November 6th-7th, 2014 at the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club in Durham, NC, is an independent conference, and a component of eMerging Entrepreneurs' “Veterans Economic Advancement project.” A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization,  eMerging Entrepreneurs, Inc. provides Career Transition Assistance, Small Business Training, and Entrepreneurial Developmental services to veterans, military spouses, and under-served minority communities.  The organization employs a grassroots approach to assisting those who seek to advance their small business interests; partnering with state & federal agencies, universities, local chambers of commerce, and military installations in an effort to extend high-tech training & resource solutions to under-served communities. Being recognized this year as a "Leadership Honoree", Rick Collins is the Founder & Executive Director of Vets Vets 360 was formed as a result of the tragic death of two friends to suicide in early 2011. Both were young, under 26 years of age, both were combat Marines and both had been civilians less than one year.  These actions led to a period of study and research and in very little time the realization that our young, high school educated, short term military service, combat veterans are our most under-served, at risk and vulnerable when entering civilian life. Many for the first time as adults. This simple fact pushed Rick to dedicate his life to a process of prevention through education. Preventing, despondency, isolation, self-medication, frustration and suicidal ideation by a simple process of engagement, education, employment and healing.  Rick and a powerful team of advisors, friends and strangers who understand the challenges is moving Vets 360 forward toward a program of Engagement in partnership with National CORE, Education in partnership  with many schools across the country, Employment, in partnership with Launch Consulting and other veteran-centric staffing teams and Healing through anyone and everyone who is committed to help this demographic of veterans deal with the inevitable impact of combat trauma, without sole reliance on pharmacological support. A component of this effort, of which I am personally involved, is the Emerging Technology Training program, a skills development project designed to support young combat veterans as they integrate into civilian life.

 The featured speaker at this year's event is Rear Admiral (RADM) Boris D. Lushniak, M.D., M.P.H., Acting United States Surgeon General. RADM Lushniak articulates the best available scientific information to the public regarding ways to improve personal health and the health of the nation. He also oversees the operations of the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps, comprising of approximately 6,800 uniformed health officers who serve in locations around the world to promote, protect, and advance the health and safety of our nation. RADM Lushniak served as Deputy Surgeon General from November 2010, until July 17, 2013, when he assumed the duties of Acting Surgeon General.

Debarghya Das has a fascinating story on how he managed to bypass a silly web security layer to get access to the results of 150,000 ISCE (10th grade) and 65,000 ISC (12th grade) students in India. While lack of security and total ignorance to safeguard sensitive information is an interesting topic what is more fascinating about this episode is the analysis of the results that unearthed score tampering. The school boards changed the scores of the students to give them "grace" points to bump them up to the passing level. The boards also seem to have tampered some other scores but the motive for that tampering remains unclear (at least to me). I would encourage you to read the entire analysis and the comments , but a tl;dr version is: 32, 33 and 34 were visibly absent. This chain of 3 consecutive numbers is the longest chain of absent numbers. Coincidentally, 35 happens to be the pass mark. IBM's Blue Cloud Meets Juniper To Alleviate Cloud Computing Adoption Fears

Security and lack of an acceptable SLA are customers' top adoption fears to move to cloud computing . IBM's recent announcements to further advance their cloud computing initiative known as Blue Cloud should help alleviate these fears to some extent. IBM announced their partnership with Juniper for their hybrid cloud initiative to provide secured private cloud with better SLA. IBM also announced new offerings for the cloud - Tivoli storage as service and a new set of cloud management tools to align with what a typical CIO would look for when migrating to the cloud.
